1 February 2011
The era of employing children under 15 years may soon be a thing of the past, the Department of Labour said in Tlhabane,Rustenburg today (Tuesday). As if that is not enough, the hiring of children will be criminalised, Thembinkosi Mkalipi; Chief Director of Labour Market policy told hundreds of stakeholders in a packed venue. "Inspectors who find anyone employing children under the age of 15 will issue spot fines instead of waiting for the lengthy court processes," Mkalipi said.
He said this during the department's public consultations into the proposed labour law changes. Mkalipi said the proposed changes are in line with the country's Schools' Act as well as International norms and practices. The road show will do a whistle-stop in Polokwane tomorrow before concluding its hectic three-week business in Kimberly on Thursday.
