The Department of Labour regrets the loss of life of the two workers who were trapped in a collapsed trench in Modderfontein yesterday (Thur). Labour Minister, Nelisiwe Oliphant, has sent her condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of need.  “Our inspectors  are scouring the area for any clues of what might have happened and preliminary findings have revealed that the two employees were covered by the dislodgement of soil that was not supported to prevent it from collapsing,” said Chief Inspector, Thobile Lamati. 

The Department of Labour has issued a prohibition notice to stop operations so as to allow inspectors to finalise their investigations.  A contravention notice was also issued due to the lack of shoring.  Investigations are continuing.
