    Module 1: Overview of COID Act legislation

    Module 2: Right to compensation

    • Right of employees and dependants
    • Criteria set for accidents
    • Accidents outside South Africa
    • Application to seamen and airmen
    • Accidents during training or performance of emergency services
    • Special circumstances in which Director-General may make or refuse an award
    • Employees requiring constant help

     

    Module 3: Employers obligations

    • Liability for payment of compensation
    • Contributions to the fund, assessments and return of earnings
    • Substitution of compensation for other legal remedies, threats and compulsion
    • Recovery of damages and compensation paid from third parties
    • Medical examinations

     

    Module 4: Procedures and steps to follow when reporting injuries and diseases

    (Relationship between the reporting of injuries and diseases under the COID Actand Occupational Health and Safety Act)

     

    Module 5: Different classes of compensation payments and manner of calculating earnings

    Purpose of the Course

    To explain the legal requirements stipulated by the COID Act in a simple and easy understandable manner. The contents of the course cover the identification of general problem areas and the completion of the different prescribed forms and other relevant documentation.

    It requires the application of the COID Act to authentic situations, its integration with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the requirements relevant to the incapacity of employees caused by occupational injuries and diseases. The contents cover the legal obligation and rights of employers, mutual associations, employees, dependants and third parties.

    The course includes an explanation and practical demonstration of the Umehluko Electronic Integrated Claims Management System.

     

    The qualifying learner is capable of

    • Describing the procedures and steps to be followed when reporting and dealing with work related injuries and diseases.
    • Describing the different classes of compensation payments, manner of calculating earnings, legal rules – inquiries, fines and penalties relevant to COIDA.
    • Explaining the COIDA and the OHSA requirements relevant to investigations.
    • Explaining the requirements relevant to the incapacity of employees caused by occupational injuries and diseases
    • Explaining the statutory cover provided by COIDA
    • Describing injury benefits provided under COIDA
    • Describing the death benefits provided for under COIDA
    • Describing occupational disease benefits under COIDA
    • Applying underwriting criteria to a policy issued under COIDA
